Here at The Little Farm by the Sea, we care greatly about the health and well-being of all the customers and families that choose our products. In turn, this sincerity means that we care just as deeply for the animals that give their lives to sustain all of us. That’s why our meat chickens are pasture-raised—meaning they are free to roam and eat the grasses and critters that closely mimic what would naturally be available to them in the wild. In addition, when their diets are in need of supplementation they are fed only certified organic and non-gmo feeds, so that they do not require antibiotics or other drugs to survive, ensuring that the meat you will be eating is devoid of harmful toxins and full of good fats, nutrients, antioxidants and minerals.
These meat birds take significantly longer to raise (10 to 12 weeks versus 6) than the traditional Cornish game hens that make up the bulk of what is sold in supermarkets today. But we think they are worth the wait. These chickens are happier, healthier, more visually appealing and ultimately better tasting. They are also filling an essential niche in our farm community—which ensures the long-term health of the ecosystems that the animals, plants and people living here depend on.
We are selling our pastured heritage breed chickens for $24 each (birds average 4-6lbs). This price reflects both the longer time required to raise the heritage breeds, the greater expense in using healthy organic feeds, and as a reflection of the value that is being created for everyone. As a bonus you are getting peace of mind in knowing that these chickens are well taken care of both during their lives and at processing by folks that genuinely care about their welfare.
